Lab 4 Operations with Vector

For this lab, the goal was to work with vector data and display skills using ArcMap 10.1 such as Intersect, Dissolve, Clip, Buffer and Erase. The map below shows the end result, of bear locations and habitats within Marquette, MI.

 Using ArcMap, I was able to manipulate data to discover the end result, viable habitats for bears within the Marquette County study area. Viable habitats involve areas within 500 m of a stream, as streams are important resources for food. I was then able to discover which areas within the 500 m range were within the DNR land area. This allowed me to portray on the map bear habitats would be located within dnr land. I also included on the map, in dark green, areas that are more than 5 km away from urban areas; these habitats would be prime locations for bears.

This data flow model represents the steps taken to produce the map components used in the end result. The blue areas are orignal shapefiles used, the yellow shapes are tools used in ArcMap to achieve the end result shapefiles, the green areas.

Lab #2 Downloading and Mapping GIS Data

Goal: The purpose of Lab# 2 was to demonstrate the ability to acquire data and use it to create maps.

Background: This lab highlights a scenario where census data must be acquired and then processed into a map.

Methods: Census data, such as population and age in 2010 for Wisconsin Counties was retrieved through the use of the American Fact Finder at www.census.gov. This information was then inspected, and inserted into ArcMap where it was joined to map data.

Results: Below is the end result, two data frames which include population and ages 20-24 in Wisconsin counties.

Lab 1 maps

Goal: The overall goal of Lab #1 was to display and differentiate between coordinate systems used in ArcMap.

 

Background: The purpose was to learn about coordinate systems and show understanding of Geographic Coordinate Systems and Projected Coordinate Systems.

 

Methods: ArcGIS ArcMap software was used to create the maps and change the projections along with the text  Mastering ArcGIS 5th edition by Maribeth Price.

 

Results: Below are two images showing the results of this lab. The first image shows a poster of different types of map projections, the second shows a map of central Wisconsin counties and their rivers and streams.
